Bringing All The Pieces Together

Certification Types

Alcohol & Drug Counselor (ADC) Certification: Certification is based largely on competence derived from knowledge of, and experience in working with, alcoholism and other drug abuse rather than reliance on academic achievement alone. The authority for this certification comes from professionals working in the field of alcohol and drug abuse who share a common concern for development of standards of competence. This credentialing will be available to any person who meets or exceeds the standards for any of the categories in which certification is offered. Counselor certification has been undertaken in Mississippi and in many other states to achieve the following goals: to enhance the effectiveness and expertise of services rendered to persons dependent on alcohol & other drugs; to enlarge public recognition for the treatment needs of persons with alcohol and other drug abuse problems, and the value of specialized professional counseling and help; and to enable third party payments. It certifies the functions, responsibilities, knowledge, and skill base required by Prevention professionals in the performance of their jobs. In creating this system, MAAP attempted to insure a broad representation of the prevention disciplines. There has been a new emphasis on prevention in health care, and we are in an era of growth and change, which provides a time for unification and which requires definition. Mississippi offers the following levels of Prevention Certification:

Criminal Justice (CJ) Certification: The demonstrated link between alcohol and drug abuse and criminal behavior has resulted in the development of this credentialing process. Individuals seeking this credential must be equally knowledgeable in the activities of the criminal justice system and substance abuse. Criminal Justice Professionals fill a unique role among health and human service professionals. Such practitioners work in a variety of settings and utilize numerous treatment approaches. They recognize the need to assure quality care to consumers. Toward that end, The Mississippi Association of Addiction Professionals (MAAP) Certification Board has designed this voluntary credentialing system for those treatment and criminal justice professionals who provide services primarily to substance abusing offenders. Mississippi offers the following level of Criminal Justice Certification:

  • CCJP - Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional

Clinical Supervisor (CS) Certification: The role of supervisor, and/or mentor, has been a part of society for many years. The helping professions have set periods of time for individuals to receive practice training to ensure adequate skills and abilities, usually during internships, practicums and post-graduate work. The field of substance abuse treatment, unfortunately, is not adequately covered in most academic settings; therefore, effective supervision is necessary to assist in the development of competent substance abuse professionals. Historically, substance abuse professionals have generally been caring, empathetic individuals who have recovered from their own substance issues with little to no academic training. As these individuals are effective, the field of substance abuse treatment is moving toward evidence based practices and thus creating the need for a unified approach.  Supervision is the method to give all substance abuse professionals the ability to be competent, evidenced based and self-aware. MAAP offers the the clinical supervisor credential to bring validity and credibility to the supervision process for the future professionals of this field. Supervision is more than discussing cases and locating solutions. Supervision focuses largely upon the development of the supervisee’s confidence, ability, competence, knowledge, practical application, networking, etc. in clinical as well as administrative arenas.

Anyone possessing the CCS credential will be recognized as having the knowledge, skill and ability to provide appropriate supervision for future substance abuse professionals. The CCS credential will signify that the possessor has received appropriate training to provide the type of supervision that will improve the future of this field. MAAP is offering this credential to ensure the future of the field to progress, improve and mature with the ever changing client, laws and funding sources. Mississippi offers the following level of Clinical Supervisor Certification:

  • CCS - Certified Clinical Supervisor

International Certification: Effective July 1, 2008, with every new reciprocal certification or renewal of a reciprocal certification from MAAP, every certified professional will receive an International Certificate from International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) at no cost. This International Certificate does not replace, but rather enhances, the existing credential currently held from MAAP. It recognizes the international scope of an IC&RC credential that extends beyond our current locale to the global network of IC&RC Member Boards and communities. The International Certificate carries with it the following benefits:

  • A common acronym across the alcohol and other drug abuse field. IC&RC’s member boards represent over 40,000 certified professionals from 75 certification/licensure entities, all of whom will be receiving an International Certificate.
